Professor Chris Wickham

Professor Wickham was educated at Keble College, Oxford, taking his doctorate in 1975. He was a lecturer and professor at the University of Birmingham for nearly thirty years, 1977-2005, before becoming Chichele Professor of Medieval History at the University of Oxford in 2005-16. At Oxford, he was Head of History 2009-12 and Head of Humanities 2015-16, and he chaired the REF History sub-panel in 2014.
Now retired, he has a part-time position as Professor of Medieval History at Birmingham. He is a historian of medieval Italy, and a comparative historian, specialising in Europe and the Mediterranean before 1250: he has published fifteen books. He is currently working on Egypt, and on the relation between history and archaeology.
