Construction Innovation Hub will develop and commercialise new building technology

Construction Innovation Hub will develop and commercialise new building technology

The Construction Innovation Hub has received £72 million of government funding through the Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund for Transforming Construction, to drive innovation and technological advances for the construction industry. This includes developing and commercialising digital and new manufacturing technologies.

National building demand

The funding will help to modernise the construction industry and create more efficiencies in order to meet national building targets for homes, schools and hospitals.

Government predicts England will require an additional 210,000 houses per year between 2014 and 2039. This volume of new houses is not currently being met. The hub will commercialise more efficient ways of making houses, which will allow industry to meet this demand.

Industrial strategy

Huda As’ad, a member of the hub’s advisory Industrial Board, said:

“The government is committed to helping transform the construction sector by improving productivity and reinvigorating the industry. The Construction Innovation Hub will help us deliver smarter, greener and more efficient buildings.”

Technology set for development at the hub includes:

* modular and off-site construction
* digital design
* advanced manufacturing

Learning from other industries

The hub will incorporate successful technology and practices from other sectors.

One initiative scheduled for early development is to take modular design platforms used in the automotive industry and develop precision manufacturing processes which apply these to construction.

These platforms will drive reductions in waste and energy consumption, and enable schools, hospitals, homes and infrastructure to be built more efficiently.

Construction Innovation Hub

The Construction Innovation Hub will be delivered by the Manufacturing Technology Centre (MTC), BRE (Building Research Establishment) and the University of Cambridge’s Centre for Digital Built Britain (CDBB).

Keith Waller, Programme Director for the hub said:

The Construction Innovation Hub is working with government, academia, the Construction Leadership Council and other industry leaders to develop solutions that can be used across projects and sectors.”

Industrial strategy

The investment is the part of government’s Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund for Transforming Construction, which is delivered by UK Research and Innovation.

The Transforming Construction challenge aims to reinvigorate the construction sector, enabling it to produce safe, healthy, efficient buildings using the latest digital manufacturing techniques. This will enable us to meet the UK’s national infrastructure programme target of £650 billion worth of projects by 2025.
