Dr Ian Campbell appointed Innovate UK interim Executive Chair
Dr Ian Campbell has been appointed as interim Executive Chair of Innovate UK. He will take up the role from 4 May 2018.
Dr Campbell will take over from Dr Ruth McKernan who is stepping down after three years as Chief Executive and, since 1 April, Executive Chair of Innovate UK.
Dr Campbell will move from his role as Director for Ageing Society, Health and Nutrition in Innovate UK. He joined Innovate UK from his previous position as CEO of Arquer Diagnostics in October 2016. Over the past 20 years he has held a number of executive and leadership roles within the life sciences, medical devices and diagnostic sectors.
During his time at Innovate UK, Dr Campbell has strengthened the Health and Life Sciences team, piloted the Investment Accelerator programme, enhanced the Biomedical Catalyst programme and initiated co-funding activities with the medical research charities.
Prof Sir Mark Walport, Chief Executive of UK Research and Innovation, said: "I am delighted that Dr Ian Campbell will be the interim Executive Chair of Innovate UK. Ian brings to the role a combination of detailed understanding of Innovate UK with a strong background in business leadership, making him ideally suited for the role during these early stages of UK Research and Innovation.
"I would once again like to thank Dr Ruth McKernan for leading Innovate UK over the last three years, and in particularly her vision and leadership in developing and delivering new approaches, such as innovation loans and the Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund."
Dr Ian Campbell said: "I am absolutely delighted to be appointed as interim Executive Chair of Innovate UK. Our role as the business-facing arm of UK Research and Innovation is more important than ever as we seek to meet the target of spending 2.4% of our GDP on research and development. Innovate UK, working together with all the research councils has a key role to play in realising that ambition through flagship programmes such as the Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund. I am really looking forward to working with and leading our fantastic team to make sure that businesses have the support they need."
Dr Campbell will lead Innovate UK within UK Research and Innovation while a recruitment campaign is conducted for a permanent Executive Chair.
