Listen to the sounds of space
Strange sounds recorded in space can now be heard in a series of short films.
The Space Sound Effects project (SSFX) -- a programme led by Queen Mary University of London, with support from UK Research and Innovation’s Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) – challenged independent filmmakers from around the world to create short films incorporating a series of sounds by satellites in space.
After touring the world at 14 film festivals across eight countries, the resulting films have been combined into one anthology – now available to watch for free online.
Sounds from the space environment around Earth are a topic of interest for scientists because of their potential effect on technology like power grids, GPS and even passenger airlines.
The SSFX project uses data from the US’s National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, and has also been supported by Queen Mary’s Centre for Public Engagement and the European Geosciences Union.
