Summer of Engineering – Going on holiday
From ensuring accuracy during bag scanning at airports, to a travel app to help promote environmentally friendly ways to travel, engineering research continues to find ways to make your holidays safe and stress free this summer.
Throughout 2018, UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) is marking the Year of Engineering, a government campaign to celebrate the world of engineering and its impact.
The Summer of Engineering highlights innovative and often unexpected ways that UK engineering has an impact on your summer, including your holidays.
Together with UKRI’s Science and Technology Facilities Council Daresbury Laboratory, Rapiscan Systems, a leading supplier of security inspection systems, have developed baggage scanning systems that offers a real-time, 3D image of luggage, and is three times faster than existing systems.
The ‘Trainaway’ app was launched in October 2013 after research funded by the UKRI’s Economic and Social Research Council into pro-environmental behaviours. A network of behavioural change and travel industry professionals was also set up to consider the use of social marketing in bringing about change.
