Today is the first day of UK Research and Innovation

A letter from Sir Mark Walport (PDF, 44KB) to mark the commencement of UK Research and Innovation, as set out in the Higher Education and Research Act.

Dear Colleagues,

I am delighted that, as set out in the Higher Education and Research Act, UK Research and Innovation came into existence on 1 April 2018 and is now up and running. I want to start by thanking the very many people who have supported UK Research and Innovation during its gestation period, both our staff and the partners and stakeholders that we have worked with.

We are looking forward to working with all of our partners and stakeholders in the research and innovation communities to:

  • push the frontiers of human knowledge and understanding
  • deliver economic impact and increased social prosperity and
  • create social and cultural impact

We can only achieve our high ambitions by working closely with partners in academia, business and government to surface the most exciting ideas and opportunities and support these in the most effective ways.

We will publish an overarching strategy for UK Research and Innovation. Our website at www.ukri.org provides an entry point to the organisation and contains links to the individual council websites. Most of your immediate contacts are unchanged and their existing email addresses and phone numbers continue to work.

On behalf of everyone at UK Research and Innovation, I would like to thank you for your support so far and we look forward to continuing to work with you in the future.

Yours sincerely,
Sir Mark Walport
