UK Research and Innovation joins Europe-wide ambition on open access

UK Research and Innovation joins Europe-wide ambition on open access

Today, Tuesday 04 September 2018, UK Research and Innovation (UKRI), joined funders from across Europe to launch cOAlition S, a collective declaration of a commitment to open access publishing in academia.

UKRI and the ten national funders forming cOAlition S, together with the European Research Council, have agreed to implement the ten principles of Plan S, which states the fundamental principles for future Open Access publishing.

The statement sets out the ambition that, by 2020, the results from publicly funded research will be open access, meaning that it is free for anyone to access. This is in line with UK’s intention that, by 2020, the UK will be publishing almost all of our research output through open access.

This ambition provides the groundwork for UKRI’s forthcoming review which will consider the implementation issues, taking advice from all stakeholders.

Openness and transparency is at the foundation of an excellent research and innovation system. The free sharing of knowledge is to the benefit of the research communities and users of research; including businesses, charities and members of the public.

cOAlition S builds on the UK’s position to move towards open access and the collation of signatories from across Europe will support our aspiration for research to be accessible and transparent.

UKRI Chief Executive Professor Sir Mark Walport, said: “Making research widely available and freely accessible is essential to unlocking its potential for creating economic, social and cultural benefits.

“UKRI is committed to collaborating with partners across Europe on cOAlition S to achieve the same.”
