UKRI appoints Director for Commercialisation of Research
UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) has appointed Dr Tony Soteriou as its first Director for Commercialisation of Research.
Tony is currently Deputy Director for Research Faculty, Infrastructure and Growth, within the Department of Health and Social Care. He has extensive experience as a senior research policy and management leader, with 25 years of research leadership, strategy, commissioning and delivery within a wide variety of research and management environments.
He will lead UKRI’s activity in the commercialisation of research from the UK’s research base, directing UKRI’s efforts to harness and exploit research to deliver economic impact for the UK.
The work led by Tony will complement that undertaken in business-led innovation by Innovate UK, and the work of the research councils and Research England in driving high quality research.
Prior to working at the Department of Health, Tony was Director of Research with Avon and Wiltshire Mental Health Partnership NHS Trust, and before that held a research management post within the South West NHS Executive.
His first research management post was at the Medical Research Council, following a PhD in Biochemistry from Cardiff University and postdoctoral research at the University of Bristol.
Tony, who will take up the role on 10 February, said: “I am passionate about research and development and am delighted to be joining UKRI in the role of Director for Commercialisation of Research.
“I very much look forward to working closely with researchers, universities, colleagues in UKRI, in industry and right across the sector.
“I have worked in R&D across a number of sectors, including the Research Councils, the NHS and government, for over 25 years and I am committed to creating and demonstrating impact through commercialisation and knowledge exchange.”
