UKRI appoints new Executive Director, Strategy and Governance

UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) has appointed Emma Lindsell and Isobel Stephen to the position of Executive Director, Strategy and Governance.

Ms Lindsell and Ms Stephen will assume the role on a job-share basis from August, having worked together in two previous job-share partnerships.

Ms Lindsell joins UKRI from the New Zealand Treasury, where she is currently Director of Commercial, Infrastructure and Urban Growth. Ms Stephen joins UKRI from the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government where, as Housing Director, she has been the overall lead on housing strategy.

UKRI Chief Executive, Professor Sir Mark Walport, said: “Emma and Isobel are outstanding appointees and I am delighted to welcome them to UK Research and Innovation.

“They have both operated at board level within organisations and led strategy, analytical, and governance teams successfully. Additionally, they offer extensive senior policy and delivery experience within government which make them ideally suited to the post. They have proven they are a great job-share partnership in two previous strategy roles, with a shared passion for excellent people leadership.”

Ms Lindsell and Ms Stephen said: “UKRI's vision is truly inspiring and the work of our team, across strategy, communications, governance and analysis, will be crucial to UKRI's success.

“We very much look forward to working with our new colleagues in UKRI and with our partners in business, academia, charities and government to see research and innovation flourish."

Ms Lindsell and Ms Stephen have previously job-shared as Business Strategy Director at the Department for Work and Pensions from 2011-2013, and as Housing Supply Director at the now-Ministry for Housing, Communities and Local Government from 2015-2017.
