Nuclear Physics Masterclass programme

Nuclear Physics Masterclasses are one-day events hosted by nuclear physics groups at universities and laboratories across the country.

They are aimed at students taking nuclear physics modules at AS or A level, but are open to any student interested in studying nuclear physics. Some universities also run days specifically for GCSE students.

The different masterclasses include a selection of the following activities run by nuclear physicists:

  • lectures
  • hands-on workshops
  • computer sessions
  • laboratory tours
  • radiation experiments
  • Lego activities.

Every masterclass is slightly different, but all provide excellent support for nuclear physics in the curriculum and deliver a fascinating insight into this exciting field of physics.

Outreach talks

UK nuclear physicists give outreach talks which are aimed at a wide variety of audiences including students, teachers, astronomical societies and other societies, and the public.

The talks focus on a range of subjects including:

  • nuclear energy
  • nuclear and particle physics
  • medical imaging
  • superheavy elements.

Nuclear physics outreach events take place throughout the year across the UK.

Find out what your nearest nuclear physics group is doing or invite a speaker to your school.

You can read about previous outreach talks on the UK Government Web Archive.
