Joint Capital Advisory Group

NERC is adapting its governance and advisory structures to provide increased agility and broader expertise in light of new opportunities within UK Research and Innovation (UKRI). To complete the governance transition, the Joint Capital Advisory Group (JCAG) formally ended in April 2019, to be replaced with the NERC Advisory Network.

The work of JCAG has helped NERC make great strides in the past five years. In particular, JCAG’s work in the creation of the NERC Capital Roadmap and the related community engagement has led to a series of transformative capital investments, including urban air pollution research laboratories, the EISCAT 3D radar and the UK Geoenergy Observatories for world-leading research into the subsurface environment.

JCAG also advised NERC on priority investments in strategic equipment at research organisations through a series of capital calls, which funded much-needed scientific equipment across its research community.

More recently, JCAG has advised NERC on its strategy as a co-lead of the environment sector of the UKRI Infrastructure Roadmap, to help shape and strategically plan the research and innovation infrastructure needs of the UK’s environmental science community to 2030.
