NERC is adapting its governance and advisory structures to provide increased agility and broader expertise in light of new opportunities within UK Research and Innovation. To complete the governance transition, the Strategic Programme Advisory Group (SPAG) formally ended in January 2019 to be replaced with the NERC Advisory Network.
SPAG has supported the allocation of £121 million in new research over its five-year lifespan, which to date has funded 59 research projects. SPAG was instrumental in developing NERC’s key investments in areas of environmental research that address critical strategic issues. Through the four strategic programme areas and 22 highlight topics funded to date, SPAG has created timely opportunities for the breadth of the environmental science community to tackle a range of important challenges.
