The NERC Council is responsible both for advising the NERC Executive Chair and making decisions, as delegated to it by the UKRI Board, on scientific, research and innovation matters. These responsibilities include:
- leadership of NERC discipline areas or fields of activity, including prioritising budgets within NERC delegated remits and the development of delivery plans
- ensuring the future of skilled specialists, researchers, scientists and others essential to the sustainability of the UK’s research and innovation capacity
- engaging with their community to develop ideas, raise awareness and disseminate strategic outputs
- encouraging and facilitating collaborative work across the nine UKRI councils to foster strategic relationships.
The NERC Council comprises a combination of previously serving council members, existing members and new members. NERC Council members represent research and innovation across higher education, industry and commerce, policy and civil society – reflecting different characteristics and professional backgrounds.
