Technicians

Technician Commitment

STFC joins 84 other universities and research institutions as signatories of the Technician Commitment initiative, supported by the Science Council and the Gatsby Charitable Foundation’s Technicians Make It Happen campaign.

The Commitment has four pillars: to ensure visibility, recognition, career development and sustainability for technicians working in higher education and research, across all disciplines.

Neil Geddes, STFC Executive Board Director for National Laboratories, and STFC Technician Commitment Champion states:

“Technicians play a key part in maintaining STFC’s leading edge in research excellence and driving solutions to technological challenges. STFC values the highly specialised skills that our technical staff develop. The Technician Commitment presents an opportunity to recognise and build upon this expertise.”

The Technician Commitment action plan addresses the four pillars in addition to the investment that we already make in our technicians. The action plan states that:

  • all technicians within the organisation are identifiable and that the contribution of technicians is visible within and beyond the institution
  • technicians are supported to gain recognition through professional registration
  • career progression opportunities for technicians are available through the provision of clear, documented career pathways
  • the future sustainability of technical skills across the organisation and that technical expertise is fully utilised.
