An arresting installation depicting global temperature changes since the beginning of the industrial revolution in 1850 forms the centrepiece of a UKRI exhibit.
The United Nations COP26 climate change conference in Glasgow opened to the public on 1 November and the UKRI feature has strong standing at the exhibition.
Based on the work of Professor Ed Hawkins from the University of Reading, the feature is comprised of a series of illuminated smart glazing panels that represent his famous Warming Stripes. They create a powerful image that visitors can contemplate while learning more about the research UKRI is funding.
A virtual platform
The stand has online access to UKRI’s virtual platform that highlights projects aligning with the daily themes of the conference.
UKRI’s Chief Executive, Professor Dame Ottoline Leyser said:
Tackling the causes and consequences of climate change will require a collaborative global effort. Our approach must be by everyone, for everyone. Research and innovation have a crucial role to play in understanding the problem and delivering solutions that work.
UKRI is funding a wide range of research and innovation that will help us monitor climate change and its effects, and deliver solutions for adaptation and mitigation. We still have time to change how we live and build a sustainable and inclusive economy. We hope that this installation portrays these messages in a vibrant and accessible way.
