UKRI increasing the minimum stipend from 1 October 2022

Student studying remotely from home

UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) is increasing its minimum student stipend by 10% on the previously announced level for the 2022 to 2023 academic year.

The increased stipend will be provided to students in receipt of a UKRI stipend commencing or continuing their studies from 1 October 2022.

The minimum stipend from 1 October 2022 will be £17,668 full time equivalent. This is a 10% increase on the previously announced 2022 to 2023 minimum stipend level.

This means the minimum stipend level will be more than £2,000 more in 2022 to 2023 than in 2021 to 2022.

Further details on changes to the academic year 2022 to 2023 minimum stipend are described in an update from Professor Melanie Welham, UKRI Champion for People, Culture and Talent. More information is also available on our studentships and doctoral training web page.

New Deal for Postgraduate Research

UKRI is reviewing how the stipend is set in the future as part of its ongoing work on the New Deal for Postgraduate Research. The new deal is a longer-term piece of work looking to ensure that postgraduate research in the UK remains sustainable, open and attractive to a wide range of candidates.

UKRI-funded students should contact their research organisation if they have questions regarding changes to their stipend.

Supporting postgraduate research students

Melanie Welham, UKRI Champion for People, Culture and Talent said:

I am pleased to announce this increase in stipend levels as a result of our review this summer of the support we provide our postgraduate research students.

As well as raising the minimum stipend now, UKRI is committed to further reviewing its funding offer as part of its current work on the New Deal for Postgraduate Research.
