Metascience sandpit: scientometrics for research assessment

Apply to attend a four-day interactive sandpit to co-develop research projects that develop, validate, and critique novel scientometric indicators for use in research assessment and in future metascience research.

The sandpit will take place in April 2026.

This grant round takes place every four years.

The grant period is between 1 October 2027 and 30 September 2031.

Apply for funding to develop a large or complex scientific project. You must have already discussed your ideas with one of our programme managers and have been invited to submit a full proposal.

You must be based at a UK research organisation eligible for UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) funding.

Collaborate with researchers in Luxembourg

UKRI and FNR have signed a memorandum of understanding to enable and support applications between researchers in the UK and Luxembourg. UKRI will fund the UK component and FNR will fund the Luxembourg component of the application.

Collaborate with researchers in Brazil

Under the UKRI-FAPESP lead agency agreement, participant UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) research councils receive and assess joint applications from eligible UK and Brazil-based researchers from the state of São Paulo on behalf of both organisations.

Return to research support bursary

You can apply for this bursary if you are a researcher looking to return to an academic research career after a break of two or more years.

You can get funding of up to £2,500 for no more than six months to support you in developing a proposal suitable for submission to the STFC fellowship scheme.
