Funding opportunity

Funding opportunity: AZ-MRC industry partnerships for academic clinicians

Apply for funding to gain knowledge and experience of the regulatory and clinical trial process involved in the development and registration of a new therapy.

You must be:

  • a registered healthcare professional currently funded by MRC or hosted within an MRC institute, unit, or centre
  • in the final 18 months of your award or funded position

We will only accept applications from those currently conducting research in the following areas:

  • cardiovascular, renal and metabolism
  • respiratory and immunology
  • vaccines and immune therapies
  • neuroscience

The award provides funding for up to one year.

Who can apply

You can apply if you:

  • are a clinically active registered healthcare professional
  • are currently funded by MRC or hosted within an MRC institute, unit, or centre. This includes, but is not limited to those holding a:
    • clinical research training fellowship
    • clinician scientist fellowship
    • senior clinical fellowship
    • clinical academic research partnerships award
    • new investigator research grant
  • are in the final 18 months of your award or funded position
  • are currently conducting research in any of the following areas:
    • cardiovascular
    • renal and metabolism
    • respiratory and immunology
    • vaccines and immune therapies
    • neuroscience
  • are able to commit to working with AstraZeneca for 60% to 80% of your contracted time and spend at least 60% of this time on-site at AstraZeneca, Cambridge, UK
  • are in the position to start the partnership within one to three months of the final decision meeting

You must have the support and hold a contract with an eligible research organisation for the duration of the award. This is expected to be the research organisation administering your current funding (for example, where you are currently employed).

As part of your application, you must include a letter of support from your research organisation confirming its support and approval.

You must take up the partnership between one and three months after the date of the decision-making meeting.

The requirement to be within the final 18 months of your award or funded position is to ensure you are at an appropriate career stage and point within your current award or funded position. This is so you can undertake the partnership without compromising your current research, training, and career development.

As part of an application, you will need to detail the progress made to date on your current project and how the partnership will be held alongside existing commitments.

You must comply with Home Office requirements and, where appropriate, hold a valid work visa or work permit to cover the period of the partnership.

Please do get in touch with the MRC training and careers team if you are unsure about your eligibility.

What we're looking for

The aim of this scheme is to provide clinically active healthcare professionals currently funded by MRC the opportunity to embed within a major pharmaceutical company, AstraZeneca, in order to gain knowledge and experience of the regulatory and clinical trial processes involved in the development and registration of a new therapy.

This funding opportunity is not intended to support the translation of a target of interest into a drug.

For this funding opportunity we will only accept applications from those currently conducting research in the following areas:

  • cardiovascular, renal and metabolism
  • respiratory and immunology
  • vaccines and immune therapies
  • neuroscience

You must be able to:

  • describe how your current research aligns with and would be enriched by the partnership
  • describe how your current research would be managed alongside the partnership and demonstrate how your research is at an appropriate stage to accommodate any pauses or delays arising as a result of the partnership
  • explain how current and ongoing commitments (for example, teaching, clinical sessions, supervision of staff employed on the MRC award) will be managed for the duration of the award
  • demonstrate the added value of the partnership, for example:
    • how the partnership will support your personal development and long-term career goals
    • the value of the partnership for both parties

What the award provides

This award provides dedicated time within AstraZeneca to gain experience and exposure in clinical drug development providing a detailed understanding of how to design, initiate, and conduct clinical trials. This may include exposure to the regulatory and ethical considerations and regulations required for clinical trials.

Successful applicants will gain skills and knowledge in good clinical practice and be equipped to lead translational clinical trials in either an academic or industry environment in their future career.

The award provides funding for up to one year. Each award will provide your salary to support protected time.

You can undertake the partnership:

  • on a full-time basis. As part of a full-time award, you can spend up to six hours a week on other commitments such as teaching, demonstrating, other funded projects or undertake up to two clinical sessions a week
  • on a part-time basis. The minimum average commitment for the partnership is 60% full-time equivalent (FTE). If the award is to be held part-time alongside other salaried activities, your total working time must not exceed 100% FTE

If successful, the MRC award your salary is currently funded by can be:

  • temporarily suspended and the end date extended once work is ready to start again. You must not incur any costs relating to the project during a grant suspension
  • changed to reflect your new working pattern, with the end date correspondingly extended if required. Please note timesheets or project records may need to be kept for the duration of the partnership

You will be expected to spend 60% to 80% of your time working on AstraZeneca projects. In addition, you will be expected to spend at least 60% of this time on-site at AstraZeneca, Cambridge, UK.

For example, for a full-time award, 80% of your time will be spent on AstraZeneca projects split 40% working remotely and 60% on-site at AstraZeneca. The remaining 20% of your time can be spent on other commitments. Flexibility will be considered to allow you to meet ongoing commitments, for example, time on-site at AstraZeneca could be on a regular weekly basis or collated into larger blocks.

Any salary savings on your current award can be used to cover other costs, in line with the terms and conditions of the award. Find out about transferring money between types of cost.

If any additional costs arise on your current award as a direct result of the partnership, for example due to salary increments, expiration of reagents you can request these to be reimbursed. Additional staff costs cannot be requested.

Funding available

The award will provide funding for:

  • your salary for up to one year
  • travel and subsistence costs to visit and work on-sire at AstraZeneca, Cambridge, UK
  • additional costs arising as a direct result of the partnership (staff costs cannot be requested)

The salary requested should align with your research organisation’s own pay structure (for example, the salary provide by your current funding).

The total salary requested should be calculated to include provision for anticipated salary increments and promotions, such that the salary at the end of the award is in line with the research organisation’s career structure for a researcher with equivalent experience. Salary increments should exclude indexation as this is calculated post-award.

The budget for the scheme is £1,250,000, from which it is anticipated five awards will be made.

There is no limit to the total support you can request. Requests should be reasonable, explained with the justification of resources attachment and be mindful of the budget available and anticipated number of awards.

Your application should be costed based on the full economic costs necessary to deliver the research. The award will fund 80% of the full economic cost. The research organisation must agree to find the balance of full economic cost from other resources.
