Research core science independently: Ernest Rutherford Fellowship

Apply for funding to run an independent research project. The project must be within the remit of the STFC core science programme.

You must be an early career researcher. Your application must be hosted and supported by an eligible UK research organisation.

You must hold a PhD and have clear leadership potential.

Improve and accelerate the impact of your organisation’s research

Apply for impact acceleration account (IAA) funding to help your organisation’s research have an impact.

Your organisation must be eligible for funding from one of these councils:

  • AHRC
  • BBSRC
  • EPSRC
  • STFC
  • MRC.

To be eligible to apply for EPSRC funding, your organisation must have been invited.

Developing engineering biology breakthrough ideas

Apply for funding to develop breakthrough ideas in engineering biology.

Your project must focus on one of the following themes from the National Engineering Biology Programme:

  • bio-inspired design
  • novel materials
  • bioengineered cells and systems.

You must be of lecturer level or above and based at an eligible research organisation.

Arts-based public engagement with climate change

Apply for funding for a new collaborative public engagement partnership. Your partnership will engage members of the public with climate change research and related societal issues.

Your team must include at least:

  • an environmental science researcher within NERC’s remit
  • an artist or creative
  • a person representing a UK community organisation or a public-facing group.

Advancing safely to full vehicle automation

UK-registered businesses can apply for a share of up to £1.5 million for up to three automated vehicle projects.

Develop new manufacturing instrumentation

Apply for funding to create new instruments that help solve a manufacturing challenge.

You must be a researcher at a UK organisation eligible for UKRI funding.

Work with US researchers: BBSRC-NSF/BIO lead agency 2021

Apply for funding to collaborate with US researchers on a single proposal.

You must be:

  • a UK resident
  • based at a UK institution eligible to receive funding from UKRI.

Projects must be in one of the following areas:

  • biological informatics
  • microbes and the host immune system
  • quantum biology
  • synthetic cell.

Develop programme ideas with the BBC: New Generation Thinkers

Apply to develop and record programmes for the BBC. The scheme includes a year of focused activity and career development.

To apply you must be a UK resident based at an eligible UK research organisation and either:

  • a PhD student
  • an early career researcher.

Your research must focus on the arts and humanities.

Software for research communities

Apply for funding to adapt or maintain existing software used by researchers.

You must be a UK resident based at an organisation eligible for UKRI funding.

You can use the funding for:

  • development and re-engineering of existing software
  • maintenance activities
  • activities that widen participation in development and maintenance.

Place-based research programme director

Apply for funding to become a programme director to help inform and shape AHRC’s approach to place-based research.

The role will start in October 2021 and last 18 months.
