Applied global health research

Apply for funding to support research that will benefit the health of vulnerable global populations.

We will accept proposals of all sizes, including large research projects of approximately £1 million and small to medium-scale applications.

Develop guidance for better research methods

Apply for funding to develop new guidance on biomedical and health research methods.

The guidance should aim to:

  • improve the understanding and use of better methods related to the remit of MRC or NIHR
  • be accessible to those without specialist methodology knowledge.

You must have a postgraduate degree and be based at an eligible research organisation.

NUTRIMMUNE: study nutrition-responsiveness of the immune system

Apply for funding to research the direct relationship between nutrition, immune function and infectious diseases relating to metabolic disorders.

You must:

  • be a UK-based researcher as part of a transnational consortium of three to six partners
  • ensure the UK part of the project is within MRC’s remit.

Clinical academic research partnerships

Apply for funding to develop your research interests through a collaborative partnership.

You must be a research-qualified healthcare professional at consultant level or equivalent. You must not be currently undertaking any substantial research activity.

You must have a research partner based at an eligible research organisation.

Establish a 1.2 GHz nuclear magnetic resonance research facility

Apply for funding to procure, install, and operate a 1.2 GHz nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) facility in the UK.

The facility must benefit all relevant research communities.

Better methods, better research

Apply for funding to improve the methods used by others in biomedical and health research.

You must:

  • focus your application on an area within MRC’s or NIHR’s science remit
  • be based at a UK research organisation eligible for MRC funding (this includes MRC units and centres)
  • have at least a postgraduate degree.

UK-Canada Globalink doctoral exchange scheme

Apply for funding to undertake a 12-week research placement in Canada.

You must be a doctoral student funded by a UKRI research council and working in any field.

Funding can be used for:

  • fees and stipends
  • research costs
  • travel and subsistence costs.

You may request up to £15,000 for each placement.

Pre-announcement: Turing AI World-Leading Researcher Fellowships: rounds two and three

Apply for funding to carry out world-leading artificial intelligence (AI) research in the UK.

There are no set eligibility criteria for this award. However, you should show that you:

  • have international standing in your area
  • can add value to AI research in the UK
  • can build AI capability and capacity in the UK.

This funding opportunity will open in spring 2022.

Clinician scientist fellowship

Apply for funding to support your move to independent investigator in a medical research field.

Your research can focus on any area of MRC’s remit to improve human health.

You must:

  • be a registered healthcare professional
  • have a PhD or equivalent
  • show evidence of career progression
  • show plans for developing leadership in your specialist area of research.

Clinical research training fellowship

Apply for funding to undertake a PhD or to reacquire research skills. Your research can focus on any area of MRC’s remit to improve human health.

You must be a registered healthcare professional, either:

  • planning to undertake a PhD or similar
  • a PhD graduate working outside of research, usually five or more years ago.
