Jeff Benson is an instrumentation engineer at the National Oceanography Centre (NOC).

He and his team take care of over 2,000 different types of scientific equipment, from temperature sensors to autonomous underwater vehicles like famous autosub Boaty McBoatface.

This involves maintaining the equipment, testing it and helping scientists understand how best to use it in their research.

Jeff spends a lot of his time at NOC’s headquarters in Southampton but also accompanies researchers on voyages on NOC’s two research vessels, the James Cook and the Discovery.
