Adrian Belton

STFC Council member

Adrian Belton is a member of the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) Council.

Adrian has a portfolio of non-executive roles that span the public sector, primarily in defence, health and the environment. Adrian is a former senior executive in the banking industry and Council member of The University of Sheffield. He brings a keen interest in how the private and public sectors, working together with academia, can deliver public good and create wealth.

Adrian brings leadership experience in science and technology, having been the founding Chief Executive of the Food and Environment Research Agency (now FERA Science Ltd), and Chair of the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory.

Drawing on a varied career of roles in risk management and governance, Adrian currently chairs the Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs’s Rural Payments Agency and the research leading St Luke’s Hospice in Sheffield. He is also a non-executive Director of NHS Property Services Ltd, having previously chaired Stockport NHS Foundation Trust.

In 2024 Adrian led the Cabinet Office sponsored Public Body Review of the UK Health Security Agency in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.
