Professor Anna Hogg

NERC Council member

Professor Anna Hogg is a member of the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) Council.

Anna is Professor of Earth observation in the School of Earth and Environment at the University of Leeds, working in the Institute of Climate and Atmospheric Studies.

Her primary field of expertise is Earth observation of the polar regions and she specialises in the use of synthetic aperture radar data for monitoring change in Antarctica and Greenland.

Over the past 15 years, Anna has built a large research group. The group is internationally recognised for studying ice dynamic processes from space and seeks to improve our understanding of the physical mechanisms responsible for driving this change. This research is significant and has real-world impact as it is the major cause of present-day sea level rise from ice sheets.

Anna has used satellite Earth observation data to write over 50 journal papers on change in ice speed, grounding line location, ice elevation change and calving front migration.

In 2020, Anna received the European Geoscience Union Cryosphere Division Outstanding Early Career Scientist award, and in 2023 she was awarded an Honorary Fellowship at British Antarctic Survey.

Through her role as an Alan Turing Institute Fellow she has supported the development of new applications for applying advanced computer techniques to satellite datasets. Anna has broad experience of collaborative research. She has managed, led or worked on 34 international research projects funded by European Space Agency (ESA), NERC and Advanced Research and Invention Agency.

Anna has also worked with partners from over 45 institutions in 14 countries. She sits on the ESA Mission Advisory Group for the ROSE-L satellite and is co-director of the NERC SENSE Earth observation Centre for Doctoral Training.

In 2020, she founded a UKSA-funded regional Space cluster, Space Hub Yorkshire, that facilitates knowledge transfer between academia and industry.

Anna is co-chair of the Space Academic Network (SPAN) and Chair of the SPAN EO working group. Through her roles, Anna enjoys working with academics and space industry experts to identify scientific and industrial strategic goals that shape the future direction of our national Earth observation and space industry capability.
