Anna Lang

Associate Director of Research, Research England

Anna is Associate Director of Research Funding at Research England, working as part of a job share with Alex Herbert-Guest.

Anna has extensive experience working at the heart of research assessment and research funding policy in the higher education sector.

Anna and Alex have shared oversight of research funding and related policy, including the £1.6 billion QR budget and the £900 million UK Research Partnership Investment Fund.

They are responsible for making the case for research funding at government spending reviews.

About Anna

Anna studied psychology at Cardiff University, before working in the charity sector both in the UK and overseas.

On returning to the UK, Anna joined the Higher Education Funding Council for England, Research England’s predecessor organisation, in 2010 working on delivery of the Research Excellence Framework (REF 2014).

Anna went on to join the funding policy team with responsibility for a number of research funding streams before being involved in the early development of the REF 2021.

Anna has international experience in research assessment, working as an advisor on the Norwegian humanities assessment.

She has developed detailed expertise in research funding policy as well as contributing to a number of spending reviews.
