Ed Hughes

Director, Insight & Engagement – Research England

Ed joined Research England in December 2019 as Director (Insight and Engagement). Ed leads on engagement with the higher education (HE) sector and other stakeholders, building insight and knowledge to inform Research England’s policy and funding interventions.

About Ed

Before joining Research England, Ed spent over 15 years at the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) and the Office for Students (OfS). Most recently Ed was Head of Health and Medicine in the Teaching Excellence and Student Experience Directorate at OfS.

Prior to the establishment of the OfS in 2018, Ed held a number of senior roles at HEFCE including as Manager of the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise on behalf of the four UK HE funding bodies, and as Regional Consultant with responsibility for leading HEFCE’s relationships with universities and colleges in the South East of England. Alongside his role as Regional Consultant, Ed had responsibility for HEFCE’s engagement nationally with further education colleges delivering HE, and led HEFCE’s work to support social enterprise in the HE sector. Before moving to HEFCE, Ed held administrative roles in research and knowledge exchange management at several universities.

Ed holds a degree in History from the University of Cambridge and an MBA from City, University of London.
