ESRC Council member
Professor Kimberley Scharf is a member of the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) Council.
Kimberley is a Professor of Economics and Public Policy at the University of Birmingham. She is an elected Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences, a managing Editor of Fiscal studies and a member of the Scientific Advisory Council of the CESifo research network.
Kimberley has a special expertise in government tax and spending policies.
She has a clear track record of producing rigorous academic research that is real-world relevant, that has impact, and that is motivated and informed by current issues and direct engagement with key stakeholders or beneficiaries.
Her research has a broad methodological base, spanning several subfields of economics, political economy, public finance, international trade and finance, industrial organisation, and reaches out to other disciplines where research synergies can be mutually explored, for example, marketing and decision sciences.
A distinctive theme that runs through many of her research projects is understanding how private behaviour and incentives, as well as government policies, shape the structure and performance of the non-profit sector.
These questions have so far been little studied by academics, but they are central to key debates taking place within the non-profit sector.
