EPSRC Council member
Professor Marika Taylor is a member of the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) Council.
Marika is Pro Vice Chancellor and Head of the College of Engineering and Physical Sciences at the University of Birmingham, and a Professor of Mathematics and Physics. Her research spans mathematical and fundamental physics, as well as physics inspired artificial intelligence (AI). She has worked with business, industry and public sector bodies on applications of mathematical modelling and AI.
Marika completed her doctorate at Cambridge University under the supervision of Professor Stephen Hawking. After postdoctoral research at University of Cambridge and Utrecht University, she became a faculty member at the University of Amsterdam.
She moved to the University of Southampton in 2012 to found a new research centre in fundamental physics, and she later became Head of the School of Mathematical Sciences there before moving to Birmingham.
Marika has extensive experience of leadership both nationally and internationally, including serving on:
- the Research Excellence Framework 2021 and 2029 subpanels for mathematical sciences
- panels and advisory boards for international research councils
- the advisory board for the Academy for the Mathematical Sciences
- the Council for the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies
