Dear signatories,

I appreciate you taking the time to set out your views in detail.

As UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) has stated publicly, we are fully committed to the principles of freedom of speech within the law and to equality, diversity and inclusion. These are the foundations on which research and innovation excellence is built.

I am committed to conducting a well-governed process to support robust evidence and principle-based decisions. Our approach is laid out in my response to the Secretary of State and a follow-up statement I made.

We have begun the process to investigate the concerns raised by the Secretary of State. The UKRI Board will take appropriate decisions based on the outcomes of the investigation. Professor Dame Jessica Corner, Executive Chair of Research England, will then come to a view about the best way to fulfil the purpose of the Research England Equality Diversity and Inclusion Advisory Group using the Board recommendations and in consultation with the Research England Council. No outcomes have been pre-determined. Decisions will be taken based on the outcomes of the investigation.

Given the sensitivity surrounding multiple aspects of the issues raised, it is understandable that there is a diversity of opinion about the best way to proceed. The approach we are taking aims to uphold the principles we espouse, supporting freedom of speech within the law and equality diversity and inclusion by creating the opportunity for engaged, evidence-based discussion and well-governed decision making.

Best wishes,

Ottoline
