Official definitions of research and development used by governments worldwide exclude the arts, humanities and social sciences. This policy briefing – published by  Nesta, Arts Council England, and the Arts and Humanities Research Council – is based on research which explores the limitations of official definitions of research and development, and proposes a new definition to make it fit for purpose for policy delivery.

The research gathered information through semi-structured interviews, questionnaires and workshops with academics, industry practitioners, funders and policymakers.
