Following publication of the UKRI open access policy, an analysis was commissioned by UKRI and undertaken by MoreBrains Cooperative to understand:
- the current state of the landscape of descriptive information (metadata) for research publications
- how well the landscape supports implementation of the technical requirements set out in the UKRI open access policy
The landscape and community readiness analysis (2022) shows that the landscape currently does not fully support implementation of the requirements set out in the open access policy and a phased approach to full adoption is necessary.
In 2024 we published clarifications on technical requirements set out in the UKRI open access policy, following stakeholder engagement and identifying a need for clarification.
The second report, published in 2025, highlights inconsistencies in the application of standards and best practices. It offers a series of recommendations to address these gaps, which are relevant to UKRI and a wide range of other stakeholders. The recommendations are grouped into three categories:
- technical
- education and outreach
- areas requiring further research
