The stipend for the academic year 2023 to 2024 is £18,622 full time equivalent.
This was announced by UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) on 2 May 2023.
We are providing additional funding to universities to cover the increase.
We are not a regulator and do not set the minimum stipend level for all UK doctoral students. If you are not funded by us, you will need to contact your university or funder to find out your stipend level.
Receiving your increased stipend
We do not fund students directly, but rather provides funding to universities in the form of training grants. We are working with our training grant holders directly to release the additional funding and get it reflected in the payments students receive as soon as possible.
You do not need to do anything. You will receive this stipend increase automatically from your research organisation. Any questions regarding the payment process should be directed towards the relevant contacts at your organisation.
London weighting, enhanced stipends, and co-funding
Some students receive a stipend that is above the minimum level set by us. It is up to your university to determine how stipends above the UKRI minimum will be adjusted.
Co-funders should account for the annual stipend increase in the usual manner. We expect co-funders to play their full role in supporting students. We will continue to support with our contribution towards a student’s stipend.
Setting the stipend in for future years
We have committed to reviewing the stipend and how it is set as part of work we are currently progressing on the new deal for postgraduate research. We will continue to engage with the community as we develop the longer-term work.
