MRC – Academy of Medical Sciences policy internship

MRC has partnered with the Academy of Medical Sciences (AMS) for more than a decade to offer this prestigious policy internship scheme to MRC students.

The scheme is open to all MRC-funded PhD students who are based in a university or MRC centre, unit or institute, and who are in their third or fourth year of study. This includes clinicians undertaking a PhD as part of their MRC clinical research training fellowship.

The scheme is designed to:

  • give students first-hand experience of the medical science policy environment
  • enable them to gain insights into how research can impact policy
  • provide an opportunity to help build valuable networks with the UK’s most eminent medical scientists and key science and health stakeholders.

Funding

Successful interns will be supported by a three-month extension to their PhD stipend.

Eligibility

To be eligible to apply, students must have their supervisor’s support and confirm they are funded by MRC. The appropriate administration office must agree to provide a three-month extension to the candidate’s PhD stipend. The budget holder must give their signed approval.

All eligible candidates will be assessed through a competitive application process.

How to apply

The 2024 opportunity for applications is now open.

Candidates complete an online application form which must be submitted with a CV, a covering letter and an endorsement or supporting statement from their supervisor. Candidates may also be required to provide a written piece on a topical science policy issue.
