MRC-funded fellowships

These include funding opportunities for both non-clinical and clinically active researchers.

Clinical research training fellowships (CRTF)

Provides funding for registered healthcare professionals to undertake a PhD or to reacquire research skills.

Application dates: opening 1 November 2021, closing 12 January 2022 (16:00 GMT); there are three opportunities to apply each year, with deadlines in January, April and September.

Clinician scientist fellowship (CSF)

Provides funding for registered healthcare professionals to establish themselves as independent investigators.

Application dates: opening 1 November 2021, closing 12 January 2022 (16:00 GMT); there are three opportunities to apply each year, with deadlines in January, April and September.

Senior clinical fellowship (SCF)

Provides funding for registered healthcare professionals to become internationally-recognised leaders in their field.

Currently closed for applications. When open, there is one opportunity to apply each year, with a deadline in April.

Career development award (CDA)

Supports post-doctoral researchers to make the transition to independent researcher by developing leadership in their own specialist area of research and establishing their own research team.

Currently closed for applications. When open, there are two opportunities to apply each year, with deadlines in April and September.

Senior non-clinical fellowship (SNCF)

Helps a researcher with a track record of leading their own independent research to become an internationally-recognised leader in their field.

Currently closed for applications. When open, there are two opportunities to apply each year, with deadlines in April and September.

Jointly funded clinical research training fellowship

These fellowships are co-funded by several royal colleges and an array of prestigious medical charities.

MRC London Institute of Medical Sciences: Chain-Florey Clinical Research Scheme

Supports medical graduates pursuing a career as an academic clinician. This scheme provides funding to undertake a PhD or to gain post-doctoral research experience.

Applications are welcome from both predoctoral and postdoctoral applicants, from doctors in any specialty. Fellows are expected to carry out their research in one of LMS’ world-leading research groups. Projects will span genetics, molecular biology, metabolism and data science.
