Postdoctoral awards

Funding for individual postgraduate researchers in the early stages of developing their independent research careers. These awards often include career development opportunities like training, mentorship and international placements.

Funding options available

Alzheimer’s Research UK: Research fellowships
These fellowships are for junior (non-clinical) postdoctoral researchers with high potential.
Funding: Salary plus up to £20,000 each year toward research costs
Duration: Up to 36 months.

Alzheimer’s Society: Research fellowships
Research Fellowships are for postdoctoral researchers who have shown exceptional promise at the start of their research career. You should demonstrate potential to be an independent researcher.
Career stage: You are expected to be within five years of your PhD viva
Funding: Salary plus up to £25,000 each year towards research costs
Duration: Up to three years full time or four years part-time

British Heart Foundation: Advanced training awards
These awards fund postdoctoral researchers to retrain and move into a different field of cardiovascular science.
Career stage: Within one to three years of submitting a PhD
Funding: Salary, consumables
Duration: Up to three years

British Heart Foundation: Immediate postdoctoral basic science research fellowships
These fellowships enable promising newly qualified postdoctoral researchers to lead a project in cardiovascular research.
Career stage: No more than two years postdoctoral experience
Funding: Salary, consumables, equipment, allowance for overseas visits
Duration: Four years

National Centre for the Replacement Refinement & Reduction of Animals in Research: Training fellowships
These fellowships support the development of promising early career researchers.
Career stage: Up to three years post-PhD
Funding: Salary plus up to £15,000 pa research costs
Duration: Up to 24 months

National Institute for Health Research: Advanced Fellowships
These postdoctoral fellowships are aimed at anyone with a PhD who hasn’t yet been awarded a chair.
Funding: Fully funded including salary
Duration: Six months with p/t options

Wellcome Early Career Awards
This scheme provides funding for early-career researchers from any discipline who are ready to develop their research identity.
Career stage: You’ve had a substantive period of relevant research training, but no more than three years of postdoctoral experience in your proposed field of study.
Funding: Salary and up to £400,000 for research expenses
Duration: Generally up to five years.
