BBSRC activities in crop science evaluation

A specialist review panel has conducted an independent evaluation of the effectiveness and impact of the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC) activities in crop science over the past decade, with particular reference to our response to a previous crop science review in 2004.

Objectives

Our objectives are:

  • to assess our response to the recommendations contained in the 2004 crop science review
  • to examine the development and effectiveness of our strategies relevant to crop science
  • to examine the balance and coverage of the crop science portfolio
  • to examine the extent to which our investments have built capacity and capability in UK crop science research, and contributed to strong research communities
  • to assess the outcomes and achievements of our major investments in crop science research and training, with a particular focus on food crops
  • to assess the economic and societal impacts of BBSRC-supported crop science research and training
  • to examine the level of interaction with industry and other potential users of crop science research
  • to examine the level of participation in international activities, including scientific collaborations and address the needs of developing countries
  • to consider how our support for basic plant science research has benefited the crop science portfolio
  • to identify ways to build on successes and address any identified gaps and issues.

Evaluation findings

The panel based their findings on information from our databases and the results of questionnaire surveys from a sample of:

  • Crop Science Initiative grant holders
  • Targeted Priority Studentship in crop science academic supervisors
  • Responsive mode grant holders
  • researchers with longer-term BBSRC support for crop science.
