MRC Unit The Gambia at London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine

The Medical Research Council (MRC) Unit The Gambia at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine is the UK’s single largest investment in medical research in a low and middle income country and is internationally recognised for its track record of research into diseases of relevance to Africa. Its success is based on innovative lab-based research, excellent clinical studies and field-oriented science, and the translation of research into clinical and public health practice.

The Unit’s vision is to lead scientific research to save lives and improve health across low and middle income countries. It aims to deliver this through investment in three major research themes:

  • Disease Control and Elimination
  • Vaccines and Immunity
  • Nutrition and Planetary Health

The Unit also has two cross cutting programmes which integrate research from the main themes: Maternal and Neonatal Health and a West African Network.
