Applicant-led mode research grants

This opportunity is paused while we align applicant-led responsive funding opportunities (standard research grant and new investigator award) with the UKRI funding modes, including removing closing dates. We will provide an update in the Spring.

The Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC) has a strong commitment to funding curiosity-led research and continues to advance excellent bioscience across our portfolio.

You can submit research grant applications at any time for consideration by one of our research committees under our responsive mode scheme, on any topic within our portfolio:

  • Research Committee A: animal disease, health and welfare
  • Research Committee B: plants, microbes, food and sustainability
  • Research Committee C: genes, development and STEM approaches to biology. Committee C will consider generic STEM approaches to biology; specific applications will be considered by the Committee providing the appropriate biological context
  • Research Committee D: molecules, cells and industrial biotechnology.

There is considerable overlap between research committees. This diagram shows some exemplar science areas and where they fit under our research committee structure. This is not an exhaustive list nor a list of current applicant-led mode priorities.

We will assess research grant applications using the most appropriate expertise. You may wish to consider our strategic and applicant-led mode priorities before submitting your application.
