Bioscience for an Integrated Understanding of Health Strategy Advisory Panel

The Bioscience for an Integrated Understanding of Health Strategy Advisory Panel focuses on the fundamental bioscience research and innovation needed to improve human and animal health and wellbeing throughout the life-course.

Terms of reference

The panel will provide advice to the UK Research and Innovation Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC) on a broad range of topics spanning the four challenge areas identified in the Bioscience for an Integrated Understanding of Health strategic framework document:

  • Lifelong Health – understanding the biological mechanisms of healthspan, with the long-term objective of maintaining and enhancing the quality of mental and physical health throughout the life-course
  • Food and Nutrition for Health – understanding the biological mechanisms by which nutrients, food components, foods and whole diets and their interactions promote a healthy lifespan
  • One Health – combat spill-over infections at the animal-human-environment interface, with a focus on prediction, prevention, response and recovery principles to improve the health and wellbeing of animals and people in their environments
  • Transformative Technologies for Health – development, validation, implementation and application of tools, technologies and data that enable innovative approaches to understand and improve human and animal health and wellbeing throughout the life-course.

This will also encompass the provision of strategic advice regarding a number of relevant, topic-specific research and innovation portfolios spanning BBSRC’s remit, including:

  • animal health and welfare
  • healthy food production and food sciences
  • the replacement, reduction and refinement of animal use in research
  • immunology; microbiology
  • antimicrobial resistance
  • neuroscience and behaviour (including mental health)
  • physiology
  • stem cells and regenerative biology
  • systems biology.
