NERC is adapting its governance and advisory structures to provide increased agility and broader expertise in light of new opportunities within UK Research and Innovation (UKRI). To complete the governance transition, the Innovation Advisory Board formally ended in October 2018 to be replaced with the NERC Advisory Network.
The work of the Innovation Advisory Board has helped NERC make great strides in the past three years. The Regional Impact from Science of the Environment programme has funded two new major projects, and is receiving attention at the most senior level in government as well as providing a model for the new UKRI Strength in Places Fund.
The substantial work that the board has done on developing thinking around innovation priority areas has allowed us to be agile in providing input to a range of Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund programmes. This is ensuring that the environmental science community and the businesses that it works with can contribute to delivering ambitions under this fund.
