Amendments to data
Research England uses many different sets of data submitted by higher education providers for a variety of purposes. There are requirements on higher education providers to supply quality data. Sometimes errors are identified in the data after it has been submitted. Assessment of whether errors should be corrected are conducted through one of two routes depending on which data collection the errors are contained in.
Research England data amendment process
For amending data in HESA Higher Education – Business and Community Interaction (HE-BCI) returns, use the Research England data amendment process.
Joint Office for Students (OfS) and Research England data amendment process
For amendments to other data returns (including other HESA collections, OfS returns and TRAC), use the joint Office for Students (OfS) and Research England data amendment process.To support provider notifications to the OfS and their submissions of data amendments, the following uses of data by Research England should be amongst those considered in the assessment of data errors:
- calculating Research England funding allocations Research England’s formula-based funding
- operating the Research Excellence Framework (REF) REF 2029
- operating the Knowledge Exchange Framework (KEF) Research England: Knowledge Exchange Framework
- publishing sector analyses of research and/or knowledge exchange metrics
- understanding the financial health and sustainability of the sector
- undertaking various EDI analyses of staff and students in the sector
- conducting analyses related to specialist providers or subjects
- carrying out other analyses of (mostly research-related) data to underpin Research England policies (e.g. subject costs)
