Year in Industry

The Year in Industry is an educational charity specialising in pre-university placements for students in science, engineering, IT and business.

Students can work for 10-12 months at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory on projects relevant to their intended university course, under the supervision of people qualified and experienced in the field, joining an established team or working in a new area. Students work in many areas, most commonly designing, testing and commissioning new equipment, systems or software.

Universities encourage students to take part in the Year in Industry as students with relevant experience generally get better degrees and better jobs.

The Year in Industry runs a business awareness course, designed to provide the skills required to operate professionally during a placement and for future careers. The scheme also supports students fully during the year with mentors to ensure that they get the most out of their placement.
