In the UK we generate about 6.7 million kilograms of human hair waste a year. Most of it ends up in landfill.

Sanne Visser, a material design PhD researcher, is working with local hairdressers to gather hair and develop systems which will enable this resource to be effectively utilised.

Sanne is one of the 2021 to 2022 Design Researchers in Residence at the Design Museum. This initiative is part of the Arts and Humanities Research Council-supported Future Observatory, a national programme for design research supporting the UK’s response to the climate crisis. It explores how design research can help society, and the role of museums in research and public engagement.
