The 11 fellowships are supported by UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) to help develop the next generation of UK research leaders.
The fellowships form part of a wider cohort of 24 early-career researchers announced by the Royal Academy of Engineering.
Co-funded by UKRI and the Government Office for Science, the Intelligence Community fellowships support ambitious fundamental research in areas of interest to the UK’s intelligence, security and defence communities.
Research topics span disciplines, including:
- artificial intelligence (AI)
- behavioural science
- advanced communications
- quantum technologies
Among this year’s awardees is Dr Jacob Webber from The University of Edinburgh.
Dr Webber’s research aims to improve the detection of AI-generated audio deepfakes by identifying inconsistencies between synthetic speech and the characteristics of authentic human speech.
Fostering collaboration
Delivered by the Royal Academy of Engineering, the fellowship programme gives early-career researchers the opportunity to pursue independent research while building connections with technical experts and end users of research.
The fellows will also receive mentoring and professional development support.
This fellowship scheme forms part of UKRI’s Industrial Strategy, IS-8 National Security and Defence Programme.
UKRI is helping to strengthen the UK’s research and innovation ecosystem by supporting talented researchers in strategically important areas and fostering collaborations between academia and government partners.
Developing future research leaders
Professor Charlotte Deane, UKRI Senior Responsible Owner for National Security and Defence, said:
These fellowships support outstanding early-career researchers to pursue ambitious fundamental research while working closely with partners across the national security community.
Through our partnership with the Royal Academy of Engineering and the Government Office for Science, the programme creates valuable connections between researchers and technical experts.
Together, we are helping to build the talent, expertise and research capability needed to address future challenges and strengthen the UK’s research and innovation ecosystem.
