Ernest Rutherford Fellowship 2025

STFC is offering up to 10 Ernest Rutherford Fellowships to exceptional researchers at an early stage of their career. The aim is to support future scientific leaders to establish a strong, independent research programme.

You must be based at a UK research organisation eligible for STFC funding.

Career development award

You can apply for support to become an independent researcher, if your research focus is within Medical Research Council remit to improve human health.

You must:

  • have a PhD or equivalent
  • show evidence of career progression
  • show clear plans for establishing independence and developing as a leader in your area of research

UKRI policy fellowships 2025

Spend 18 months as a UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) core policy fellow, Natural Hazards and Resilience policy fellow or What Works Innovation fellow to inform policy to address pressing national and global challenges.

You must:

  • be based at a UK based organisation eligible for UKRI funding
  • have a PhD or equivalent experience
  • be a researcher in an eligible discipline in accordance with the specific position applied for

Mathematical sciences postdoctoral fellowship

These are personal, career development focused awards for the mathematical sciences.

You must have either:

  • a PhD
  • more than four years’ experience in a relevant field by the start of your fellowship

Candidates with more research experience may prefer to apply for our open fellowship.

Mathematical sciences open and open plus fellowship

These are personal, career development focused awards for the mathematical sciences.

You must have either:

  • a PhD and some years of additional research experience
  • more than four years’ experience in a relevant field by the start of your fellowship

Future Leaders Fellowships: round 10

Apply for funding to support ambitious research and innovation across UK Research and Innovation (UKRI)’s remit. You must be an early career researcher or innovator who is either:

  • looking to establish or transition to independence
  • developing your own original and ambitious plans within a commercial setting
