Professor Dave Newbold

STFC Executive Director, National Laboratories Science and Technologies

Professor Dave Newbold is Executive Director, National Laboratories Science and Technologies at the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC).

Dave is an experimental particle physicist. Before joining STFC in 2018, he led the fundamental physics section at the University of Bristol.

Dave gained his PhD in 1998, and has participated in the WA89, SSD, CMS, SOLID, and DUNE experiments, with over 1,000 refereed publications.

His scientific interests are wide-ranging, and focus on direct searches for physics beyond the Standard Model using a variety of techniques.

He has expertise in the development of high-performance data acquisition and data processing systems for experimental science, and in online and offline computing.

Dave is currently Chair of the European Laboratory Directors Group, and a member of the European Committee on Future Accelerators and the CERN LHC Committee.

Outside work, Dave is a recent convert to country living, and is engaged in a comprehensive and long-term survey of pubs in North Wiltshire. He is currently renovating a 15th-century cottage with zen-like slowness and precision.
