Dr Jef Grainger

BBSRC Interim Executive Director, Research Strategy and Programmes

Dr Jef Grainger is Interim Executive Director, Research Strategy and Programmes at the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC).

In his substantive role as Associate Director for Thematic Research Challenges, Jef has provided strategic leadership for BBSRC’s mission-led research areas. He has a long track record with BBSRC in research strategy development and investment case-building across a range of leadership roles and focal areas.

He has worked on secondment to the Government Office of Science, on the joint publication ‘Animal and Plant Health in the UK: building our science capability’ with the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs. He has also worked on a follow-up joint strategy document from the UK government and UK Research and Innovation, on the vision and high-level strategy for UK animal and plant health research.

Jef has an honours degree in plant science from the University of Edinburgh and a PhD in plant molecular biology from the University of Cambridge. He undertook a period of postdoctoral research in plant virology at the John Innes Centre before joining BBSRC in 2004.

As Interim Executive Director, Jef has responsibility for:

  • frontier and interdisciplinary research
  • science strategy, including horizon-scanning
  • responsive and strategic programmes
  • tools and technology
