Details

In 2019 the Medical Research Council (MRC), National Institute for Health Research (NIHR), and Wellcome, wrote to vice-chancellors, deans, and principals of medical schools and universities to highlight the importance of institutional support for academic trainees and mid-career researchers. They expressed concern that agreements to support these researchers were being ignored once the funding had been secured.

The three bodies commissioned Shift Insight to conduct multi-method research to help better understand the pressures that contribute to this poor support for these groups, with a view to implementing positive change.

The report highlights recurring themes from the survey results and provides preliminary recommendations for action.
