A Sankey diagram is a type of flow chart that shows how something moves or changes from one set of categories to another, that is read from left to right.

The diagram shows approximately how the many funding lines categorising UKRI’s budget in the 2025 to 2026 financial year, shown on the left, are distributed into the new framework and buckets that UKRI is using for the 2026 to 2027 financial year and beyond, shown on the right.

The new model represents a fundamental change in how money flows through UKRI and is invested in research and innovation.

It is important to note that this mapping is indicative and does not offer full comparability between the previous approach and UKRI’s new funding model.

This is the website for UKRI: our seven research councils, Research England and Innovate UK. Let us know if you have feedback or would like to help improve our online products and services.
