Details
In April 2025 the Science and Technologies Facilities Council (STFC) charged an independent panel of international experts to perform a review of accelerator science and technology activities within the UK. The review was based around two key charges:
- Why should STFC and the UK continue to invest in accelerator science and technology and what would the impact on the overall accelerator field be if it were to stop or continue with the status quo?
- If STFC and the UK continues to invest, what would a sustainable and world-class accelerator science and technology programme look like, in scope and focus?
The panel received submissions from organisations and institutes from across the UK accelerator science and technology landscape.
The panel has reviewed accelerator science and technology in the UK. Extensive briefing material and presentations provided the panel with detailed input and visions from the accelerator leaders and the community in the UK. The materials were provided by the:
- Accelerator Science and Technology Centre
- Cockcroft institute
- John Adams Institute
- Central Laser Facility
- Extreme Photonics Application Centre
- ISIS Neutron and Muon Source (ISIS)
- Diamond Light Source
The panel was supported and advised by representatives from STFC and the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council.
This report presents the main findings and outcomes of the review.
