Infrastructure roadmap programme

In 2018 to 2019, UKRI was commissioned by the UK government to develop a research and innovation infrastructure roadmap, based on an understanding of our existing landscape and future opportunities. Two final reports were published:

Five years on, UKRI are now undertaking a major refresh of the roadmap programme, to be published in 2025.

The refresh of the roadmap will have three areas of focus:

  • a demonstration of our progress since 2019 and knowledge of the current landscape
  • a forward look to future opportunities
  • an illustration of the impact of research and innovation infrastructure

How we are delivering the roadmap refresh programme

To refresh the research and innovation infrastructure roadmap, UKRI are working closely with the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT) and engaging with wider government.

We are also engaging with a broad range of stakeholders, including:

  • infrastructure managers and organisations
  • UKRI Infrastructure Advisory Committee
  • Advisory Group for Digital Research Infrastructure
  • the wider research community

The Infrastructure Steering Group provides strategic advice and oversight of the Infrastructure Roadmap refresh programme

Developing the refresh programme

To inform this work, we have:

  • completed a survey of approximately 300 research and innovation infrastructures that will update our evidence base on current capabilities and challenges
  • revisited and identified strategic opportunities and cross-cutting issues to identify challenge areas that will require infrastructure to support
  • held workshops with a range of stakeholders to identify cross-cutting themes

We will be continuing community engagement during the development of the roadmap refresh, with publication planned later in 2025.

In spring 2025 we will be holding two community workshops to explore a subset of cross-cutting themes that have emerged through work to date. We will also run a broader engagement exercise with the wider community to test the key findings and identify any gaps.
